Arrived 9AM in Tsukiji market to get sushi for brunch. Headed to Sushi Dai which they say is the top place toe-to-toe with Sushi Daiwa. I was only expecting a 1.5hr-2hr wait, but my goodness look at the lines everywhere!! Horrible.
I roamed around for a bit before lining up, but almost every sushi joint has a long line. So might as well line up for one touted as the "best" one right.
About 1 hour into the wait I can't bear the boredom any longer. Note, there's no free wi-fi around the sushi shops. So I made friends with the person behind me and made a deal to save a spot on the line while we take turns to roam around the back-markets of Tsukiji.
A whole range of fresh goods, souvenirs, and housewares are sold in Tsukiji. But if you plan on buying Japanese housewares I suggest you check Kappabashi instead. They have a better selection at cheaper prices. I got similar plates shown on the photo above for only 150-200 yen in Kappabashi.
Sushi Dai
After 3.5 hours I was almost there. Peeking through the window just wishing the people inside would hurry up as my pot belly was screaming in agony!
I got the Omakase to sample as much sushi as I can.
Finally around 1:30PM we were seated inside!
First up was O-toro, but this one didn't look nor taste like much an O-toro. It was more like Chuo-Toro. Not sure if the chef got it wrong, but I was too hungry to complain.
Despite this little mix-up, this beauty still tasted good and melted away nicely in my mouth.
O-toro? |
Came next is an assortment of really good-quality sushi, except for the clam which had too much of a fishy taste for me. Others were clean tasting and were very fresh.
My bad for out of focus photos. Again, was too hungry so I just took quick snaps.

It's obviously shrimp but I forgot the name. This was one of the top picks for me. Delectable sweetness from the fresh shrimp meat!

Off course my extra piece is non other than the out-of-this-world, melt-in-your mouth, succulent O-toro! :,)
Beautiful! |
Thanking the chef with my new friend from America who was doing a lay-over and had Sushi Dai as first destination. He wasn't smiling but I assure you he was happy with our meal hahaha.
