How do I get to Mt. Fuji? (from Tokyo)
Several options, and it depends on which city you're coming from. I was coming from Tokyo so the best deal for me was the JR Fuji pass.
JR Fuji Pass |
The pass costs ¥5,600 and can be used for 2 consecutive days. Cheapest I found if you did it on your own is ¥7,020 not including getting to Shinjuku station. Basically this is what it includes.
Day 1 (Going to Fuji)
1. Train ride on all JR trains within Tokyo. This will help you get to Shinjuku station where you board the Limited Express train bound for Otsuki.
2. Train ride on Limited Express trains going to Otsuki station where you will take the Fujisan Express.
Line at Otsuki Station |
Board the Fujisan express, during Obon it gets crowded. I stood up during the whole ride. |
3. Train ride on Fujisan Express going to Kawaguchiko station where you will the the Mountain Climber's bus to Mt. Fuji fifth station.
Inside the Fujisan express, Kawaii! |
Kawaguchiko station |
Look for stop #7 to ride the Mountain Climber's bus |
4. Bus ride on Mountain Climber's bus going to Mt Fuji fifth station where the trail head is located.
You may also purchase separate bus tickets if you did not avail the JR Fuji Pass. they cost ¥2,100 round trip and ¥1,540 one way. |
Mt Fuji 5th station where the trail head for Yoshida trail is located. |
Note: You may also use the Fujisan express to visit FujiQ highland resort if you want. I opted not to as I imagined how unexciting it would be to ride a coaster alone.
Day 2 (Going back to Tokyo)
1. Bus ride on Mountain Climber's bus going back to Kawaguchiko station.
2. Train ride on Fujisan Express going to either FujiQ highland resort if you want to relax at an Onsen after a long hike, or head back to Otsuki station.
3. Train ride on Limited Express trains going back to Shinjuku station.
4. Train ride on all JR trains within Tokyo. You may get off at any stations of JR lines in Tokyo area.
Important Notes:
- Both Limited Express trains and Fujisan Express trains have set schedules with long intervals. Schedules also change during Obon week so better plan carefully.
Limited Express train schedule bound for Otsuki is found here.
Fujisan Express trains schedules found here. Choose Otsuki and Kawaguchiko as your Departure/Arrival stations
- Fujisan Express Trains can get crowded during summer months especially Obon. So better be there early. I believe you need to pay extra for reserved seats.
- You can purchase the Fuji pass at several offices found on this site.
- The Mountain Climber's bus also follows a schedule. Refer to this site.
